Barbastelle’s 'Vestige Étésien' is an adventurous journey where music, life, and imagery intertwine. This album is a logbook of sound, inspired by geological formations shaped by winds, currents, and the slow passage of time. Written over the last decade, these compositions find new light through the unique voice of the Barbastelle ensemble.
Barbastelle is a musical hybrid, blending the timbres of strings and woodwinds with impressionistic drumming, merging written chamber jazz with the spontaneity of free improvisation. Haunted by the memory of Renaissance ‘broken consorts’ and the legacy of jazz greats like Mal Waldron, Wayne Shorter, Richard Davis, and Eric Dolphy, Barbastelle crafts a polymorphous, imaginary sound. Harmonies reminiscent of Debussy or Bartok emerge from the polyphonic trees, while melodies often evoke Takemitsu’s delicate sonic calligraphy.
In 'Vestige Étésien,' the ensemble explores a world both tranquil and teeming with life. The music unfolds with an expanded sense of time, capturing the murmur of interwoven layers of polyphony. Free improvisations carry the sound into unknown territories, like Etesian winds shaping and eroding the landscape. Accompanied by a film that reveals the hidden world beneath flowing water, the project zooms in on micro-events of time and the rough edges of sonic texture, inviting us to witness the imperceptible.
Together, the album and film offer a contemplative experience — a deep dive into evolving soundscapes and the quiet forces that shape them. 'Vestige Étésien' is an ode to transformation and the beauty found in stillness and change.
